Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation (MMPC) officially unveiled the new Montero Sport to hundreds of their guests at Okada Manila in Paranaque City. The new offering provides a fresher take on the carmaker’s flagship model. It may still resemble its predecessor in a number of ways, but this more enhanced version provides a more robust look, paired with a more refreshed interior that oozes a more premium and comfortable vibe.

The carmaker’s signature Dynamic Shield front view design concept has been inculcated in the Montero Sport’s new genes as it highlights a wide front fascia with its LED headlamps, front grille and the exquisite marriage of its lamps at the bumper corners. The higher bonnet of this behemoth exudes a deeper front face, while a more solid, striking chrome design gives it that sense of sophistication.

MMPC also has proven that it listens to its customer as it dropped the previous teardrop taillight design at its rear, bestowing — in return — a simpler layout.

Not to mention, the top-of-the-line Montero Sport now also sits on redesigned 18-inch two-tone alloy wheels.

Inside, rejuvenation takes the form of a refreshed floor console and soft padded interior door handles. Storage trays under the floor console, meanwhile, are now also accessible from both sides.

While a 220V 150W AC outlet endows passengers the luxury of charging their gadgets anytime. This feature is available on all automatic variants. It also sports easy-to-read color LCD meter and Smartphone-Link Display Audio (SDA) (both eight inches in size) which are compatible for Apple Carplay and Android.0.

Under its hood is a 2.4L MIVEC turbodiesel engine mated to either a six-speed automatic transmission (GLS variant) or an eight-speed automatic transmission with manual select (GT variant). All variants produce 181 hp at 3,500 rpm and 430 N-m at 2,500 rpm.

The new Montero Sport keeps its Super-Select 4WD-II system that delivers optimal traction for all surfaces and confidence-inspiring handling characteristics. Its off-road mode with a newly designed switch on 4WD models elevates all-terrain performance and self-extraction capability through the integrated control of engine output, transmission settings and brake power.

Other features of the 2020 Montero Sport include: the new Mitsubishi Remote Control smartphone app that applies to its accessibility and security (e.g. power tailgate and automatic door locks) and eight-way power adjustable driver seat.

Its number of safety features are as follows: lane change assist and rear cross traffic alert functions, hill start assist and hill descent control, multi-view camera system (that limits blind spots when parking the vehicle) and airbags (seven airbags for the GT 4WD, six airbags for GT 2WD and two airbags for the GLS and GLX variants).

The new Montero Sport will be available in four variants and seven color options. The only current available units are the 4×2 variants, with higher-end 4WD variants, as per MMPC, being offered in the first quarter of 2020. The Montero Sport GT 2WD AT variant is priced at P1,998,000.00, while the Montero Sport GLS 2WD AT is tagged at P 1,769,000.00.

Available colors are: White Diamond, Sterling Silver Metalic, Titanium Gray, Medium Red and Jet Black.
