Confiscated Tacloban officials inspect the seized meat products from Bulacan following their interception at the San Juanico Bridge.
TACLOBAN CITY — Some 700 crates of assorted frozen meat products worth around P1.6 million were confiscated at San Juanico Bridge last Friday as part of the city government’s ban on pork products coming from Luzon to avert possible entry of African swine fever (ASF) to Visayas and Mindanao.
The delivery van of Marby Food Ventures was intercepted at the foot of the famous bridge before noon by the task force led by the City Veterinarian’s Office.
City Veterinarian Dr. Eunice Alcantara said the meat products were confiscated due to incomplete documents required for meat products to enter the city.

“The driver only showed us the delivery receipt of the products coming from Bulacan, which is considered as the ground zero for ASF that is why we confiscated the shipment,” Alcantara said.
Delivery receipts showed that the products were bound to stores in Tacloban, Ormoc, Digos City, Iligan City, San Francisco City, Koronadal City, Butuan and Surigao.
San Juanico Bridge is a vital transit point of goods coming from Luzon to Visayas and Mindanao through the Maharlika Highway.
Alcantara said any shipment of meat and meat products from outside Tacloban should have proper documents such as license to operate of the company from the Food and Drug Administration, a Certificate of Product Registration, shipping permit and veterinary health certificate if the shipments are livestock.
She said the confiscated products will be buried at the City’s Sanitary Landfill in Barangay San Roque.
Mayor Alfred Romualdez issued Executive Order (EO) 19-09-6 on 27 September 2019 that bans the entry of swine from Luzon and other identified ASF-affected areas.
The EO also created an executive committee and taskforce tasked to adopt an ASF Preparedness and Contingency Plan to protect the local hog raisers.
Meanwhile, the City Veterinarian assured the public that there is sufficient supply of pork and meat products because the supply comes from Mindanao.
She also said that Tacloban City and nearby municipalities are still free of ASF and will continue the strict watch of entry of pork and other meat products entering the city.
ASF is a deadly viral disease that affects domestic and wild pigs and is known to cause devastating economic effects. It is, however, not a threat to human health according to experts.
