John Mark Tokong: Lone Filipino hopeful (Siargaosurf.com)
Local bet John Mark Tokong emerged the lone Filipino bet still in the hunt for the title as he advanced to the round of 16 Monday in the 25th Siargao International Surfing Cup at Cloud 9 in Surigao del Norte.
The 23-year-old Tokong placed second to Indonesian Oney Anwar in Heat 7, to the thrill of the hometown crowd.
“I just enjoyed the day,’’ said Tokong, who posted 13.10 points against the 13.30 of Anwar.
Jay-r Esquivel of Pangasinan, Tokong’s teammate in the Philippine team for this year’s Southeast Asian Games, finished third in his heat won by South African’s Koby Oberholzer.
Jose Gundesen of Argentina finished second with 13.10 points to eclipse the 11.75 of Esquivel.
The top two performers in each heat earned tickets to the next round of the tournament sanctioned by the World Surf League.
Top favorite Skip McCullough of the United States made it from Heat 5 with Tomas King. Local bet Christian Araquil finished fourth in this heat.
Australians Cooper Davies and Thomas Cervi likewise moved to the next phase, along with Argentina’s Santiago Muniz, Japan’s Jin Suzuki, Australians Callum Robson and Samson Coulter, New Zealand’s Elliot Paerate-Reed and Hawaii’s Noah Beschen.
