He has starred in a couple of shows on television and played several roles on the big screen. But when this writer asked Kapuso hunk Ruru Madrid what character he wants to portray, he thoughtfully answered, “I would like to be a soldier… ever since. I can’t do it anymore in real life, so I hope I get to do it in either a movie or teleserye.”

Ruru started as a neophyte artist in GMA 7 via Protege: Battle for the Big Artista Break as one of Philip Salvador’s top picks. Then, he was cast as Charlie in Dormitoryo (2013), as Erick in Let The Love Begin (2015), as Ybarro in Encantadia (2016), as Andres Silang in Alyas Robinhood (2016), as Emong Magsino in TODA One I Love (2019) and as a regular mainstay of Sunday Pinasaya.

In no time at all, he was awarded the Outstanding Breakthrough Performance By An Actor during the 5th Golden Screen TV awards for his role in Dormitoryo and the Best Male Actor award during 31st PMPC Star Awards for Television, a feat he tied with Dingdong Dantes. These awards may keep coming as he shares billing with Jasmine Curtis-Smith in CaraxJagger, the romantic drama film produced by APT Entertainment and Cignal Entertainment.

Directed by cinematographer Ice Idanan and with an original story by Acy Ramos, CaraxJagger tells the unforgettable story of former couple Cara (Jasmine) and Jagger (Ruru) as they face a major conflict that will test the foundation of their relationship. As Cara does everything within her power to forget the painful event that ruined their relationship, Jagger fights to remember his life after losing his memory in a terrible accident.

Further into the interview, Ruru admits that he shares a lot of personalities with his character Jagger. “He is very friendly, and a gentleman, too. Jagger grew up with his lolo (grandfather) so I can see how he treats a woman — very traditional. And honestly, I’m like that, too, since I also grew up with my grandmother.”

He also shares a few of habitual gestures with Jagger. “With the way I move. I’m an old soul because of my family. I like riding my motorcycle, which Jagger loves doing, too.”

Ruru admits he gets pretty serious at times which, in the end, fits perfectly with his character. “At times it gets tough because of the flashbacks I’m doing for the movie. The present Jagger isn’t like me at all, but the past Jagger is so me,” he said.

But now, more than ever, he is all set for his first lead role in a mainstream film. “It’s a dream come true. I’m excited and nervous at the same time. I have always wanted to work with Jasmine because I truly believe that she is one of the best actresses of her generation. I am grateful for the trust that APT gave me and Jasmine. This is one project that I will never forget. I am very proud of CaraxJagger.”

CaraxJagger hits theaters beginning 6 November.
