Sen. Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go formally pushed for the establishment of the Philippine High School for Sports (PHHS) during the hearing on Senate Bill 10866 last Tuesday.
Go said he has been very vocal of this advocacy and urged his fellow senators to support the measure “for the benefit of your youth and Philippine sports.”
Even before being elected as lawmaker, sports already occupies a special place in Go’s heart.
In fact, he was tapped as head of delegation of Gilas Pilipinas in the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifier and was behind the move to have NBA star Jordan Clarkson play for the men’s national basketball team during the 18th Asian Games in Jakarta last year.

Aside from that, he also supports the quest of Hidilyn Diaz in the Tokyo Olympics as well as the country’s hosting of the 30th Southeast Asian Games.
Now, he wants high school students who have potential to be placed in a sports academy where they can study while harnessing their respective athletic careers.
“With the establishment of the PHHS in a very close proximity to world-class facilities, our student-athletes can enjoy a level of training that is at par with the best of the world,” Go said.
“This type of training and education can catapult our student-athletes to illustrious careers in sports, whether as athletes or coaches, managers and any other sports-related professions.”
Go’s proposal got a shot in the arm when no less than President Rodrigo Duterte mentioned it in his State of the Nation Address.
With that, Go didn’t waste any time and reached out to concerned agencies and government departments to put the President’s order off the ground.
“In pushing for the passage of this measure, I have closely coordinated with agencies, such as the Philippine Sports Commission, the Department of Education, the Department of Budget and Management and, of course, the Bases Conversion Development Authority, to ensure that this bill, if passed, shall allow us to hit the ground running,” Go stated.
