Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation, in partnership with the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines and the local government of Mandaluyong City, introduced a new campaign, dubbed BiyaHero, to promote road safety.

Speaking with the press this week, Pilipinas Shell general manager for health, safety, security and environment Oliver Ortega said Shell is advocating road safety as a shared responsibility between everyone on the road.

“We at Shell believe the first step to achieving road safety is to be aware of responsible driving practices. Road safety starts with all of us, and being aware, alert, and prepared can help save lives,” Ortega told reporters.

Citing figures from the Metro Manila Accident Reporting and Analysis 2018 annual report, total road accidents on the country last year stood at 116,906. This was despite the full implementation of comprehensive laws like Republic Act 4136, or the Land Transportation and Traffic Code.

According to the World Health Organization, about 1.25 million people worldwide were involved in road traffic accidents.

As part of the BiyaHero campaign, Shell has prepared several measures that involve numerous different organizations to help promote road safety.

Shell service centers are now offering year-long special offers, such as a free 14-point safety check by expert mechanics for motorists who want to make sure their vehicles are roadworthy.

Free engine insurance and roadside assistance are also available for those who opt for the Shell Helix Ultra oil change package.

Initially limited to provinces such as Batangas, Cebu and Cagayan de Oro, Ortega said the campaign has now reached Metro Manila — with Mandaluyong as the pioneering city.

“This is the first in Metro Manila and this sends a stronger message. We have the vision to have nationwide reach and if we can replicate this with other local government units, that is a welcome avenue as well,” Ortega said.
