The national women’s volleyball team is tipped to have a big finish when it sees action in the second leg of the ASEAN Grand Prix from 4 to 6 October in Sta. Rosa, Laguna.
Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas, Inc. (LVPI) president Joey Romasanta said their hopes are high on the national spikers following an impressive performance in the first leg staged in Nakhon Ratchasima in Thailand last week.
Romasanta, in fact, was at the sidelines when the Nationals eked out thrilling five-set win over Vietnam to cop the bronze medal in this prestigious four-nation tournament that serves as test event for the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.
And if that’s an indication of things to come, the former Project: Gintong Alay chief is optimistic that the national squad can pull off a shocking win over regional rivals Thailand and Indonesia.
“Well, first and foremost, without any drama, I was very emotional when the team beat Vietnam,” said Romasanta, who made it clear that they are looking at winning at least a bronze medal in the biennial meet that the country will host from 30 November to 11 December at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

The performance of the Nationals in the first leg was really quite impressive.
Despite the absence of star players like Jaja Santiago, Dindin Manabat, Mika Reyes, Alyssa Valdez and Denden Lazaro, the Nationals still gave Indonesia and Thailand a run for their money before posting a nail-biting win over Vietnam, which was powered by Japan V.Premier League bigger Tran Thi Thanh Thuy.
Tran erupted for 25 points, but the Filipinos still ran away wit a 25-21, 22-25, 25-21, 15-25, 15-12 win, thanks to the impressive performance of Ces Molina, Kalei Mau and Major Baron.
Baron, in fact, was even named as the Best Middle Blocker of the tournament.
The LVPI, however, is set to announce the composition of the team that would see action in the second leg in the next couple of days.
“Since we’re playing in our homecourt, we want to come up with a strong team,” Romasanta said, adding that the Grand Prix is a perfect preparation for the biennial meet.
