San Beda was the first team in the Final Four after beating San Sebastian College, 91-76, last Tuesday to improve its mark to 13-0 and reach the semis for the 14th straight seasons.
“We are happy about this development, but our goal in eliminations is to finish one of the top two teams for a twice to beat advantage in the playoffs,” Red Lions head coach Boyet Fernandez told Daily Tribune yesterday.
“I always tell my players that they should stay on the ground and be humble, although 13-0 is quite an achievement,” he added.
San Beda drubbed the Altas last 16 August, 102-56, that led to the controversial leave of head coach Frankie Lim.
But Fernandez expects a different Altas team this time as they are also fighting for their lives.
“Well, knowing Perpetual, I have so much respect to coach Frankie and I consider them one of the strong teams in the league,” said Fernandez, who will bank on James Canlas and Donald Tankoua.
“We have to stop and limit (Kim) Aurin, (Ben) Adamos and (Tonton) Peralta through our defense,” he added.
Edgar Charcos and Peralta will lead the campaign of the Altas, who will try to bounce back from a sorry 86-91 loss last Thursday to drop to 3-8 in the standings.
Meanwhile, Mapua tries to fan its Final Four chances with a victory over the Heavy Bombers, who are at the bottom half of the standings with 4-8 mark.
The Cardinals are coming off a 93-67 victory over Arellano University for their sixth win in the last seven matches to stay in the running for a Final Four berth.
“I’m proud of my players who worked hard for this win. We’re not thinking about our ranking and Final Four chances, we’re just taking it one game at a time,” Mapua head coach Randy Alcantara said.
