The ongoing campaign to cull hogs in areas identified to have been affected by the African swine flu will soon enable Quezon City to declare its locality as being ASF-free.
In fact, Mayor Joy Belmonte had already declared as early as Tuesday that the city is close to being clear of the disease.
Dr. Anamarie Cabel of the City Veterinarians Office reported that around 1,500 pigs from 482 hog raisers in Barangay Bagong Silangan have been put down as part of the effort. In Barangay Payatas, another 369 of 909 pigs have already been contained.
Because of this, there have been no new reports of infections in the two barangays.
“I think the two barangays shall have been contained of ASF once we finished depopulating the hog population there,” Belmonte said. “Maybe we can declare an ASF-free city already.”
She added that her office has no longer received reports from barangay chairmen following the dissemination of educational and information materials on ASF.
