PUERTO PRINCESA CITY — Sen. Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go didn’t waste the opportunity of talking to the athletes to push for the establishment of the National Academy of Sports for High School (NASHS).

Gracing the opening of the Philippine Young Games-Batang Pinoy 2019, Go told young athletes that the government is determined to further boost the country’s sports development program as a way of developing the youth into productive citizens.
Based on Senate Bill 397, or the law that creates the NASHS, the academy will serve as the premier training center to develop the athletic skills and talents of high school students.
It would be built in the New Clark City in Capas, Tarlac with an initial proposed funding of P150 million.

Go said this is the gift of President Rodrigo Duterte to athletes and the youth.
“I filed the bill in the Senate so we can have a National Academy of Sports for High School,” said Go before thousands of athletes, coaches, team managers and school officials at the Ramon V. Mitra Sports Complex late Sunday here.
Go, an active sportsman before winning a seat in the Senate, said the academy would be patterned after Philippine Science High School and Philippine High School for the Arts in which deserving students will be given scholarships.
Then, with the collaboration by the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), they will be given chance to be part of the Philippine Team that will see action in various international competitions.
“It’s also like studying high school. But the only difference is that you would have a curriculum that includes subjects about being an athlete. You will become scholars and will be supported by both the DepEd and PSC,” said Go.
“The curriculum has special emphasis on physical education and sports development. This kind of academy would be a big help to the future careers of our youth who want to be professional athletes someday.”
“Through NASHS and other programs, I want to boost the research and development of sports science in the country and make sure that our sports program will improve.”
Go said NASHS had already been filed and major stakeholders are already discussing the facilities.
“Most likely, this will take place in the next two years,” Go said. “This would be the first-ever sports academy in the Philippines.”
