E. Visayas ports bar sick animals

TACLOBAN CITY – Sick animals will not be allowed to enter major ports in Eastern Visayas to prevent the spread of African Swine Fever (ASF).
DA Regional Director Milo delos Reyes also has advised the ASF Inter-Agency Task Force to beef up personnel manning the entry and exit points of ports in the region to ensure that no hogs and pork with incomplete documents are allowed to enter.
In Northern Samar and Southern Leyte, LGUs have volunteered 50 personnel to strictly monitor and ensure that no live hogs enter the region with questionable origin.
The task force is composed of veterinarians from local government units, Philippine Ports Authority, Philippine National Police, National Meat Inspection Service and quaratine officials.
Meanwhile, Delos Reyes said that Eastern Visayas remains free from ASF amid reports of hogs that died in Ormoc City and in Northern Samar.
Blood samples were collected from the carcass for laboratory analysis.
He said lab tests results indicated the hogs died of ordinary respiratory disease and not of ASF.
