MACAU — San Miguel Beer head coach Leo Austria won’t force June Mar Fajardo to play here in the East Asia Super League (EASL) Terrific 12 basketball tournament.
The five-time Most Valuable Player joined the trip here and Austria said the six-foot-10 center’s status is uncertain.
“The reason why we will not force him to play is we want him to be ready in our first game against Phoenix,” said Austria, referring to their opening game in the PBA Governors’ Cup against the Fuel Masters on 25 September.
“We don’t want to have another slow start. After our championship in the Philippine Cup, we struggled in the next tournament and the management told they don’t want to happen it again anymore,” he added.
After winning the Philippine Cup, San Miguel labored its way it to the playoffs of the Commissioner’s Cup and took the No. 7 seed in the playoffs.
The Beermen needed to overcome the twice-to-beat advantage of No. 2 seed NorthPort in the quarterfinal stage, beat Rain or Shine in the semifinals and TNT KaTropa in the best-of-seven championship series, 4-2.
