In line with the commemoration of the Buwan ng Wika, the Philippine Embassy in Berlin hosted “Hallo, Halu-Halo,” a gathering of Filipino and foreign friends that showcased the rich culture of the Philippines

Summers in the Philippines would seem incomplete without the ubiquitous halo-halo.

Sold at almost every corner, it is a concoction of colorful ingredients — crushed ice sits at the bottom and then sweetened beans, nata de coco, gulaman, jackfruit and coconut strips are layered on top of each other. This merry mix will then be topped with a scoop or two of ice cream, a slice of leche flan and sprinkled with crunchies like pinipig.

This mouthwatering concoction has been getting popular in other parts of the world. And it recently made waves in the land where an equally deliciously cold dessert —- the spaghetti ice cream —- is popular.

In line with the commemoration of the Buwan ng Wika, the Philippine Embassy in Berlin hosted “Hallo, Halu-Halo,” a gathering of Filipino and foreign friends that showcased the rich culture of the Philippines.

GUESTS queue for their halo-halo while others go for the pansit and puto.

Guests had their own kiddie session at the consular area, where they were treated to a story-telling of Haluhalo Espesyal, a Filipino children’s book by Yvette Ferreol.

Kids had a fun time customizing their halu-halo with their own choice of toppings like gummy bears and wafer rolls.

Guests were requested to bring their own reusable containers and utensils in line with the embassy’s sustainability efforts.

The event was part of the embassy’s food diplomacy initiative as well as its Kapihan/Kainan at Kuwentuhan para sa Kababaihan series under its Gender and Development program.
