Three cities in Bulacan registered the highest number of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections in the country.
Bulacan Medical Center HIV Unit head nurse Ron Chie Santos identified the cities as Meycauayan, Malolos and San Jose del Monte. The information was released during the first LGBTQ+ leadership summit held in Malolos on Friday.
A total of 2,270 HIV cases were recorded in Bulacan from 1984 to May of this year. San Jose del Monte has 257 cases, Meycauayan 123 and Malolos 115 cases.
The Bulacan towns of Santa Maria and Marilao yielded 102 HIV cases each.
HIV is a virus that attacks immune cells called CD4 cells. According to medical journals, CD4 cells are white blood cells that move around the body, detecting faults and anomalies in cells as well as infections. It is a sexually transmitted infection that can also be spread by contact with infected blood or from mother to child during pregnancy, childbirth or breast-feeding.
