The Department of Education (DepEd) is now working closely with Congress to restore its proposed budget for the Government Assistance and Subsidies (GAS) or voucher program for fiscal year 2020.
Undersecretary Annalyn Sevilla, DepEd for Finance Service and Education Programs Delivery Unit, said that the department will continue to seek the support of both the Executive and Legislative branches for the voucher program next year.
She said they will continue to engage the Department of Budget and Management (DBM), the House of Representatives and the Senate to ensure continuity of the GAS program.
Originally, the DepEd proposed P52 billion to fund GAS next year, but the DBM’s 2020 National Expenditure Program allocated only P31.18 billion — which was already a 2.93 percent decrease from the 2019 General Appropriations Act of P32.12 billion for the said program.
Sevilla stressed the need to sustain the GAS program, not only because it promotes education for the youth but also mandated by law.
