Malacanang on Wednesday expressed elation over the Commission on Appointments’ (CA) swift confirmation of former senator Gregorio Honasan II as Secretary of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT).
“We welcome the confirmation of the ad interim appointment of Mr. Gregorio Honasan II as the Secretary of the Department of Information and Communications Techmology by the Commission on Appointments,” presidential spokesperson and chief legal counsel Salvador Panelo said in a statement.
“The Palace is confident that Secretary Honasan would be able to implement the President’s marching order of providing the Filipino people better connectivity through the full rollout of the national fiber optic cable network and operationalization of the country’s new major telecommunications player,” Panelo added.
The CA approved Honasan’s appointment at the committee level within three minutes before he was confirmed during the plenary session.

The new DICT chief said Duterte’s marching order to him were to connect government to other governments, domestic and global, to businesses and to the citizens and do the job fast, cheaper if not free and securely.
Duterte appointed Honasan as DICT secretary in July and predicted “exciting times ahead” for the agency with him at the helm.
Prior to his appointment, Honasan served in the Senate for three terms.
Honasan was a former colonel in the Philippine Army and was part of the Reform the Armed Forces Movement (RAM), a group of renegade military officers that played a crucial role in overthrowing late strongman Ferdinand Marcos in 1986.
