A missionary couple working at Adventist Hospital in Calbayog died after being trapped in an early morning fire that gutted down the doctors residential building inside the hospital compound last Saturday.
Dr. Pacifico Maypa, a 60-year-old surgeon from Iloilo and Medical Director of the hospital, and his wife Delie Mae Maypa, 57-years-old from Ozamis who worked as Nursing Director, were found dead by fire rescuers inside their room.
The couple worked as medical missionaries in Africa for eight years before coming to Calbayog City.
According to the spot report of the Bureau of Fire Protection, the fire started at around 4:20 a.m. on 31 August although witnesses said they noticed smoke coming out of the building a few minutes before 4 a.m. Fire out was declared at 4:40 a.m. on the same morning.
The report added that 13 other people who were staying in the same building managed to escape to safety.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire.
The Adventist community will hold a memorial service to celebrate the life of the couple on 8 September at Central Philippine Union Conference in Cebu City.
