FOSHAN, China – Despite a pair of massive beatings from the hands of Italy and Serbia, Gilas Pilipinas is not yet to raise the white flag in their campaign in the FIBA Basketball World Cup here.

Head coach Yeng Guiao said they wouldn’t go down without putting up a fight when they face Angola in their final match of the first round on Wednesday at the GBA International Sports and Cultural Arena.

He said although the morale of his wards were greatly affected by the embarrassing 46-point loss to Italy and 59-point setback to the Serbians in their first two matches, they would still do their best to give the reigning African champions a run for their money.

“We’re not yet done in this campaign. There’s still a lot that we can accomplish,” said Guiao, adding that China’s narrow lost to Poland in their game late Monday gave them a small chance of emerging as the best-ranked Asian team that would give them a spot in the Tokyo Olympics next year.

After Angola, action shifts to Beijing, where the Filipinos will play two more matches in the classification for 17th to 32nd places starting Friday.

“With China losing, they’re still not guaranteed to be the top Asian team that will make it to the Olympics. So we have to win as many games as we can.”

Guiao, however, raised the alarm bells against Angola, a squad bannered by players who have played American brand of game with Will Voigt of the United States serving as mentor.

“They are tough and rugged with a lot of World Cup and even Olympic experience. We have to prepare our minds and bodies for a tough game tomorrow.”
