Bureau of Corrections chief Nicanor Faeldon has been compelled by the Senate to appear before a hearing Monday regarding the questionable release of convicts.

Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) chief Nicanor Faeldon is under no direct order to appear before a Senate inquiry on Monday morning regarding the controversial Good Conduct Time Allowance (GCTA) Law and the aborted release of convicted rapist and murderer Antonio Sanchez.

Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go said in a text message President Rodrigo Duterte did not instruct Faeldon to attend the Senate Blue Ribbon and Justice and Human Rights Committees inquiry which starts 10 a.m. Nevertheless, Faeldon arrived at the Senate about 40 minutes before the hearing starts.

“It is up to BuCor head Nicanor Faeldon. A subpoena for him to attend has already been released by Senator (Richard) Gordon,” Go said.

On Saturday, Gordon, who chairs the committees, issued a subpoena compelling Faeldon to testify in the inquiry.

Earlier, Faeldon has informed Gordon that he cannot attend the inquiry as he will attend a seminar in the Canadian Embassy.

Late Sunday night however, Faeldon confirmed his attendance through lawyer Jelina Magsuci.

Go assured authorities behind the release of detainees convicted of heinous crimes and drug lords will be held accountable after the investigation.

“Sisiguraduhin nating mananagot lahat ng naging involved sa early release dahil sa GCTA ng mga drug lords at iba pang kriminal kung mapatunayang illegal o hindi ito sumunod sa tamang proseso,” Go said.

“Sa hearing mamaya, hihimayin natin iyan at sisilipin ang aplikasyon ng batas na RA 10592 at ang pag-grant ng GCTA sa mga bilanggo. Mananagot ang dapat managot. Nandito tayo para ayusin ang sistema at siguraduhin na hindi maipagkakait ang hustisya para sa mga biktima ng mga krimen,” Go said.
