The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), through the Philippine Embassy in Mexico, has confirmed the death of two Filipino seafarers in a local bar in Veracruz that was attacked by gunmen and set on fire on 27 August 2019.
The Embassy is now in touch with authorities and the Filipino seafarers’ manning agency for the repatriation of their remains, the DFA said.
The department also extended its condolences to the families of the Filipino seafarers, and the Embassy said it stands ready to provide further assistance if needed.
Philippine Ambassador to Mexico Demetrio R. Tuazon reported to DFA that 24 others were killed and 13 suffered burns when a suspected drug gang set fire to the Caballo Blanco bar located in the Port of Coatzacoalcos in Veracruz.
Mexican media reported that 16 men and nine women were found dead inside the bar after the attackers douse it with fuel and threw molotov cocktails. The attackers also blocked the exits of the bar.

Veracruz Governor Cuitlahuac Garcia released a statement on social media attributing the attack to a dispute between rival gangs in the area while reports quoted him as saying that a gang had wanted to sell drugs in the bar.
The bar’s owner was also kidnapped on 24 August and was later found beheaded, according to local reports.
