The burning of M/V Life Ferry 16 early Wednesday morning was due to engine failure, Philippine Coast Guard spokesperson Capt. Armand Balilo said.
The passenger ferry’s engine malfunctioned because of old spare parts, Balio said Thursday.
M/V Life Ferry 16 left Santander, Cebu at around 6 p.m. on Tuesday before going up in flames off the waters of Dapitan in Zamboanga del Norte past midnight the following day.
Three passengers died― one-year-old Chloe Labising, 60-year-old Danilo Gomez Sr. and a certain Orlando Heneral.
“Nagpapasalamat tayo sa mga tumulong na mga barko. Kasi wala kaming asset doon,” Balilo said. “Natutuwa kami ‘pagkat nagresponde sila kasama ang mga tao natin.”
Lite Ferry Holdings Corporation chief operating officer Fernando Inting said each passenger will receive ₱10,000 in cash assistance.
