Commission on Elections (Comelec)-Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR)on Wednesday said police personnel who will serve as special board of election inspectors (BEI), will undergo training to prepare them for their May midterm elections duties.
Lawyer Julius Torres, Comelec-CAR director said they are not taking any chances and are looking at police personnel who will serve as poll inspectors if they cannot find sufficient number of voluntary teachers who will serve (during the election).
Under the election service reform act, the poll body can deputize policemen to serve as BEI, in case there is a shortage in the number of volunteer public school teachers.
This, as Police Regional Office Cordillera director Chief Supt. Rolando Nana assured the public the number of police personnel who would secure the region is sufficient and on full alert.

“There are more than 5,000 PNP personnel who are ready to be deputized for the coming elections,” he said.
Torres added there had been cases in the past when policemen were made to serve as poll inspectors in lieu of teachers who requested to be replaced for security and safety reasons.
He said the personnel would be regarded as election officers entitled to the same honorarium as the teachers.
Torres added they are still assessing the security situation in various areas of the Cordillera before they come up with a list of election hotspots, hopefully over the weekend.
