Stating that corruption is not a victimless crime and should not be swept under the rug and conveniently forgotten, Rep. Juliette Uy on Friday asked concerned government offices to conduct investigation on the collapse of a school covered court in Naawan, Misamis Oriental.

“There may be other accidents waiting to happen involving the same contractor and the same officials who failed at public service,” Uy said.

The lady legislator was reacting to the collapse of the unfinished school covered court last week in Linangkayan Elementary School in Barangay Linangkayan, injuring at least two persons.

Uy suspects the incident was caused by the use of substandard construction materials even as she calls for a multi-agency probe on the matter involving the departments of education, public works and local government.

“Judging by the pictures posted and reported in the news media, it is possible the roof’s pillars were not secure, the weight load of the roof on those pillars were unbalanced, or there were substandard materials used or poor welding done,” the lawmaker said.

Uy stressed that they should investigate since DepEd issues clearance and approval on the structures built in public schools and the DPWH are tasked to regulate the contractors who will be awarded with the projects as well as identify the already blacklisted contractors.

“In any case, the DepEd, DPWH and DILG probe must determine what went wrong, identify those responsible, mete out the corresponding sanctions, and file the necessary administrative and criminal charges,” she added.

DPWH provincial engineering office head engineer Mario Batar said they will determine if the contractor used materials different from the required specifications.
