Davao Oriental Gov. Nelson Dayanghirang yesterday told the media that search for survivors continues after a flash flood hit the province Tuesday night due to heavy rains, affecting thousands of families.

Dayanghirang said the assessment is still ongoing but based on a partial report submitted Tuesday some 13,000 families were affected in the municipality of Manay, more than 3,000 families in Caraga and about 2,000 families in Tarragona.

Based on the report from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council a 38-year-old woman died after flash flood swept away the house where she was sleeping. A nine-year-old girl and another 38-year-old woman are also reportedly missing.

“The search operation continues for the missing persons,” Dayanghirang said.

He said as of the moment the clearing operation is almost done and they started extending initial assistance to the flood victims.

The provincial government also committed to extend assistance to the family of the deceased and will fast track aid to those affected.

Key agencies and offices are continuously monitoring the situation and coordinating with their counterparts in the affected municipalities.
