Extending the operating hours of the Manila Light Rail Transit System Line 2 (LRT-2) for at least two hours as proposed does not make economic sense and should even prove disadvantageous, Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) administrator Reynaldo I. Berroya said on Thursday.
This developed after the chairman of the House Committee on Metro Manila Development earlier this week proposed for the extension of the operating hours of the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) and the LRT Lines 1 and 2.
At present, the MRT-3 runs from 5:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. and the LRT from 4:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.
In the case of LRT-2, Berroya said the proposal has to be studied further due to practical constraints such as maintaining the train cars which takes at least four hours daily and which are performed at night.
“Our trains are old so they need continuous monitoring, maintenance, and we only do that during nighttime. If you extend it for two hours at least, it’s a bit disadvantageous to our maintenance program,” Berroya said.
