An attempt to smuggle four luxury vehicles was stopped when alert officials at the Port of Cebu intercepted the illegal shipment, the Bureau of Customs (BoC) said yesterday.
In a statement, the BoC said the cars were found inside a 40-foot container Friday when it was checked after it was flagged for “possible misdeclaration.”
The shipment imported from Japan by Kylemelan General Merchandise, with office address in Malabon City, arrived at the Port of Cebu on 19 December 2018 under Bill of Lading 181206750071 declared as one piece “car body for decoration.”
However, x-ray scanning of the shipment indicated the container actually contained four completely-built up motor vehicles.
Physical inspection of the container conducted on 3 January 2019 yielded a Range Rover Evoque, a Porsche 911, a Mercedes Benz and an Alfa Romeo, the BoC report said.

The examination was conducted by the assigned customs examiner together with the importer’s broker and representatives from Enforcement and Security Service, CIIS, X-Ray Inspection Project and Office of the District Collector.
Authorities said a Warrant of Seizure and Detention will be issued against the whole shipment and cases may be filed against the importer, including one for violation of the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act.
Sources told the Daily Tribune that a businessman known as “Mr. Chua” was behind the smuggling attempt.
