San Miguel Beer formally rolled out the red carpet for its newest acquisition — star playmaker Terrence Romeo — as it prepares for the Philippine Basketball Association Philippine Cup starting 13 January.
After days of anticipation, Romeo finally showed up at the Beermen’s practice at the Acropolis Greens gym yesterday to join an already formidable crew that is heavily tipped to win another title.
His presence turned the Beermen into a heavy favorite in the All-Filipino Conference, which they have been ruling for the past four years.
But head coach Leo Austria said there’s a drawback in this development.
“There’s always pressure and it’s bigger now especially that Romeo is already on our side,” said Austria, who acquired Romeo from rival Talk ‘N Text in exchange for bench players Brian Heruela, David Semerad and future picks.
“It will not be easy because every team will surely hunt us.”
Aside from Romeo, San Miguel also acquired veteran Ronald Tubid and gunner Paul Zamar in the offseason, bolstering the support group of stars Junemar Fajardo, Christian Standhardinger, Alex Cabagnot, Arwind Santos, Marcio Lassiter and Chris Ross.
Despite the super team that they formed, Austria doesn’t see any easy win for the Beermen.
“People are saying San Miguel just got even better and stronger. But the thing is, it’s only on paper,” he said.
“This will be a difficult season for us. We may be the strongest on paper. But talent alone can’t win games. It will take hard work. So we’ll see.”
