Rolando Mendoza despite the passage of eight years since that tragic day.
Mendoza and eight hostages lost their lives in the 90-minute firefight that ensued when the police stormed the bus where the bemedaled cop held at gunpoint several tourists from Hong Kong.
Retired police officer SPO4 Gregorio Mendoza, brother of the slain cop, lighted candles and said prayers yesterday for his brother and the slain hostages in front of the Quirino Grandstand where the tragic drama unfolded.
In an interview, Mendoza said he has not yet recovered from the trauma the incident brought to his family.
He appealed to President Rodrigo Duterte to help him with the administrative case for neglect of duty he is facing before the Civil Service Commission (CSC) in connection with the hostage-taking incident.
Following the hostage incident, the Manila Police District charged Mendoza before the CSC for neglect of duty, saying he disobeyed police protocol when he took part in the negotiations for his brother’s surrender without authorization.
He was arrested for breaching the exclusion zone while carrying a gun.
The MPD also charged Mendoza with conspiracy to commit serious illegal detention, serious disobedience and illegal possession of firearms in three different courts in Manila Regional Trial Courts but all these cases were dismissed for insufficiency of evidence.
