JAKARTA — The Philippines suffered yet another heart-break, this time from the hands of Japan, 12-25, 15-25, 21-25, in the women’s volleyball competition preliminaries of the 18th Asian Games Tuesday at the Bulungan Sports Hall here.
Alyssa Valdez and Jaja Santiago led the scoring parade, but the vaunted defense and attacking prowess of the Japanese were too much for the Filipinos to handle.
Valdez had seven kills while the Japan-bound Santiago chipped in five spikes and three aces for eight points, who faded against the well-oiled offense of the Japanese led by Miyu Nagaoka, Nana Iwasaka and Risa Shinabe.
Nagaoka, the star player of Hisamitsu Springs in the Japan V. Premier League, delivered nine kills and two aces while Iwasaka and Shinabe combined for 12 kills on 12 attempts, a testament on how fluid their executions are against the defense of the Filipinos.
Still, head coach Shaq Delos Santos of the Philippines was defiant.

“We know that Thailand and Japan are two powerhouse teams with high level of volleyball,” said Delos Santos, whose wards opened the tourney with a straight-set loss to Southeast Asian rival Thailand.
“There’s a lesson in every setback. We know that this kind of losses will give us experience and make us tougher, stronger for future tournaments.”
Delos Santos said they would definitely be at their best in their next two assignments – Hongkong on Thursday and host Indonesia on Saturday.
