JAKARTA – Yeng Guiao’s tenure as head coach of Gilas Pilipinas had been extended following an impressive performance in the men’s basketball competition of the 18th Asian Games here.

The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) announced Monday that the fiery mentor will also handle bench duties when Gilas Pilipinas competes in the second round of the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifier next month.

SBP president Al Panlilio said he talked to Guiao during a dinner with SBP chairman emeritus Manny Pangilinan and Philippine Olympic Committee president Ricky Vargas Sunday night to formally inform him of their plan to have him as coach while Chot Reyes remains suspended.

Reyes, who guided the Nationals to the FIBA World Championships in 2013, was slapped with a one-game suspension due to his involvement in a massive brawl between the Filipinos and the Australians last month in the third window of the Asian qualifier at the Philippine Arena in Bulacan.

Also suspended are Andray Blatche, RR Pogoy, Troy Rosario, Calvin Abueva, Jayson Castro, Troy Rosario, Terrence Romeo, Carl Bryan Cruz, Japeth Aguilar, Jio Jalalon and Matthew Wright.

Assistant coach Jong Uichico was also banished after being caught on camera pummeling an Australian player with a barrage of solid punches.
