Presidential Communications Operation Office (PCOO) Secretary Martin Andanar said yesterday that the National Identification (ID) System recently signed into law by President Rodrigo Duterte will make life easier for Filipinos.
In a radio interview, Andanar said Filipinos are already saddled with too many ID cards like those by the Social Security System, Government Service Insurance System, Tax Identification Number and clearances from the National Bureau of Investigation to name just a few.
“So, if you have a National ID System, it will be easier, especially for overseas Filipino workers. We will do away with so many ID,” said Andanar in Filipino.
“Likewise, the human interface in government transactions will be lessened, along with opportunities for corruption and red tape,” he added.
He cited a third reason for having a National ID – as a tool in fighting the threat of terrorism through the easier identification of individuals by the police and other law enforcement agents.

Foreigners with ill intentions in the Philippines will also be easier to identify, said Andanar.
The printing of the National ID will be through bidding under the Philippine Statistical Agency.
Andanar expressed hope that government printers like the APO Production Unit, the National Printing Office or the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas may end up printing the ID.
