A number of barangay officials in Metro Manila cannot be relied upon when it comes to removing road and sidewalk obstructions in their areas. If not parked cars, vendors occupy what is supposed to be public space for pedestrians and motorists.
In May, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Danilo Lim himself ordered officials of some villages in Tondo to remove road obstructions in their areas, including a barangay office. But Lim’s call fell on deaf ears.
On Wednesday morning, the MMDA’s Sidewalk Clearing Operations Group demolished a barangay hall built on the road at the corner of Villaruel Street corner Abad Santos Avenue in Divisoria, Tondo.
Officials of Barangay 235, Zone 22 had been warned a couple of times to remove the hall.
It’s a shame that the village leaders themselves did not comply and continue to obstruct the road since they are the occupants of that office.
