Communications service provider Ericsson plans to roll out so-called 5G technology in the Philippines that would make the country “truly open for business.”

At the 30th anniversary of Ericsson Philippines, company President and Country Manager of Singapore and Brunei Martin Wiktorin said they are now in the process of implementing a 5G network in the Philippines, coinciding with a similar roll out in Australia and Japan.

“As soon as the terminals and the networks are available, then we are good to go [with the 5G roll out],” he said during a panel discussion. He added the most important benefits of this new technology is its impact on enterprises and not just providing services to consumers.

Ericsson gave a demonstration of the technology on Wednesday using its 5G trial system and achieved data speeds of 23 Gbps (gigabyte per second), a first in the Philippines. The technology showcase also includes 5G use in 3D augmented reality, mining and healthcare.

Wiktorin said 5G reinforces the company’s commitment to bring in the latest technology innovations to the country and develop the 5G ecosystem in the country to support a digital Philippines.

Nunzio Mirtilio, head of market area Southeast Asia, Ocenia and India said Ericsson has been a key part of the telecom ecosystem in the Philippines for 30 years, bringing voice and data services to millions of customers.

“We are the first to market with solutions that enable today’s networks to evolve smoothly to the next generation of technologies. 4g is the foundation of 5G, and Ericsson is well poised to help the operators in the Philippines to transition from 4G to 5G,” he said.
