Star forward Calvin Abueva will wear a different jersey in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Governor’s Cup after Alaska decided to trade him to Phoenix following a lengthty suspension.

The Aces shipped the former San Sebastian College stalwart to the Fuel Masters for Karl Dehesa and their first-round pick next year in a shocking deal that is expected to be approved by PBA commissioner Willie Marcial.

The deal marks the end of Alaska’s six-year partnership with the do-it-all forward, who was drafted by the Aces with the second overall pick in the Annual Rookie Draft in 2012.

“The Aces have decided to trade Calvin Abueva to Phoenix. We would like to thank Calvin for his six years of service with Alaska and the good memories,” said head coach Alex Compton in a statement.

“We felt as a franchise it was best for both Alaska and Calvin to have a fresh start at this time.”

Hints about the deal loomed as early as June when Alaska placed the former Rookie of the Year under indefinite suspension after going incommunicado for the second time due to personal reasons.

It gained ground when Alaska refused to change its stand and played without Abueva in the semifinals of the Commissioner’s Cup, paving the way for the Aces to lose to San Miguel Beer in a best-of-five semifinals series.

Still, the Aces were grateful for to the six fruitful years with the Pampanga-native that resulted to one championship in four PBA Finals appearances.

On Abueva’s part, he collected a number of individual citations with Alaska including the Best Player of the Conference award in the 2016 Commissioner’s Cup.

He also became a six-time All Star aside from clinching the Mythical First Team twice and the All-Defensive Team once.

With Abueva’s departure, Vic Manuel was given the key to engineer Alaska’s attack after finishing second to June Mar Fajardo in the Best Player of the Conference race.
