The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) yesterday declared that separate groups were behind the Basilan bombing that killed 11 people and an explosion at the Port of Masbate last Tuesday.
AFP spokesman Col. Edgard Arevalo said the Abu Sayyaf terrorist group was behind the Basilan bomb explosion.
The Masbate bombing and bomb scare in Antipolo, on the other hand, were the handiwork of New People’s Army (NPA) rebels, he added.
The AFP official said the NPA did the Masbate attack using improvised explosive devices that sunk a motorized boat “because they want us to acknowledge them as the other force we need to be afraid of.”
Arevalo asked the public not to jump to conclusions on the identity of the driver of the van used in the Lamitan, Basilan attack last 31 July.

“Those who say that the driver was a foreigner, no one can really say who he really was. (This is) because the witnesses, the soldier and the CAFGU members, heroically died while performing their acts,” he said.
The AFP brushed aside the claim of the Islamic State (IS) group of being behind the Basilan attack that saw the van exploding while being inspected by soldiers.
Five CAFGU members and a soldier died on the spot, while five others died during treatment.
PVC pipe bombs were used in the Masbate City port bombing, according to city police chief Supt. Paul de Mesa Cabug, Masbate City police chief.
The pipe bombs were similar to the ones police recovered from an NPA camp in Barangay Mabiton, Claveria, Masbate.
