Hidilyn Diaz will do her best, but she’s not promising anything when she competes in the weightlifting competition of the 18th Asian Games next month in Jakarta.
Due to the absence of her top rivals, chances of winning the gold medal is higher for the Rio Olympics silver medalist after going hoe empty handed in the Doha and Guangzhou editions of this prestigious quadrennial meet.
Still, she won’t let her guard down and will not let complacency get in the way.
“I have very good chances of winning a medal of any color,” said Diaz during the final day of the Hidilyn Diaz Weightlifting Open Championship yesterday at the Meralco Gym in Pasig City.
“I’m not promising anything, but I will do my best.”
Diaz will be entering the Asiad as a heavy favorite.
Her main challengers from China and Kazakhstan are still serving suspensions after being tested positive for illegal substance while the Olympic gold medalist from Chinese Taipei is not yet sure to compete.
“I just need to surpass my personal record of 97 kilogram and I will surely win a medal. I just have to be smart and do my best,” she said, adding that challengers from Thailand and Turkmenistan are serving as major threats.
“I will not squander what I went through in training. Let’s see. I ‘m not promising, but I will do my best to come up with a good finish.
To gear up for her Asian Games return, Diaz emerged with a silver medal in the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in Turkmenistan and a bronze medal in the World Championship in Anaheim, California last year.
This year, she ruled the 58-kilogram category by lifting 90 kilograms in the snatch and 115 kilograms in the clean and jerk in the Philippine National Games in Cebu last May.

“I’ve been a flag-bearer a couple of times before. I need to focus. Being a flag-bearer is not my priority. My priority is to win.”
