The communist New People’s Army (NPA) yesterday released a police officer, who was held as “prisoner of war” since December last year, to Special Assistant to the President Christopher Lawrence “Kuya Bong” Go in North Cotabato.

Go received Insp. Menardo Cui, former deputy chief of President Roxas Municipal Police Station, from the NPA in Sitio Apog Apog, Barangay Panaka in Magpet town at around 1:45 p.m.

Subsequently, Go turned over Cui to Director Manuel Gaerlan of the Police Regional Office XI at Camp Catitipan in Davao City.

According to Go, the NPA freed Cui without any condition.

“There is nothing in exchange for this, we just help each other. We are all Filipinos,” said Go after the release.

He said the family of Cui sought his assistance for the freedom of the police officer last January.

“We are just happy to help our fellow Filipinos,” Go said.

Go added he told Cui to spend time with his family first. Cui was abducted by armed NPA rebels last 29 December.

The NPA “arrested” Cui for his alleged “counter-insurgency activities and possible crimes against the masses and the revolutionary movement.”

Go said currently he is working for the release of another NPA captive who is a soldier, without elaborating.
