To capture the essence of the Philippines, Japanese watch brand G-Shock came up with a contest entitled “Design the National G-Shock,” open to all Filipinos.

Out of a whopping 1,200 entries, 10 winning designs were picked, and Dylan Dylanco emerged in first place.

At the grand launch held at G-Shock’s flagship store at Ayala Vertis North on July 5, all 10 winning designs were showcased. Only 200 pieces will be available to the public at G-Shock stores for P9,995 each.

Dylanco says she drew her insights from the enclaves of northern Ifugao to the southern tribes of the Moros. In designing the watch, Dylanco had in mind the Filipinos to promote them. Her design related to their clothes, bags and even the Filipino skin. These were not only designed because of Filipino traditions, but because she saw them as symbols of bravery. Bravery is symbolized in elaborate tattoos, voluntary cicatrices (scarification) and intricate traditional weaves, which mark the wearers, who are usually warriors and high ranks like chieftains. These marks indicate their status, toughness and courage in the ancestral warrior society.

Dylanco took indigenous, symmetrical weaves in bright, bold and contrasting colors and fused them with the details of the Philippine flag — three stars and the sun — to rise through the ranks and become the winning entry.

“My design is entitled ‘Habi,’ which is an old weaving technique our ancestors used to create art and basic supplies,” said Dylanco. “I hope that my design will remind Filipinos of the Philippines, no matter where they are.”

Dylanco’s work is hereby known as the new National G-Shock watch, a totem that epitomizes both the tradition of toughness of the iconic G-Shock line and the resilience of the Filipino people.

This is also G-Shock’s first limited edition Philippine-designed watch that will only be available locally.
