An armed man was shot dead by Cebu Police in a shootout in Archbishops residence in Dionisio Jakosalem Street Tuesday morning.
The gunman was identified by the Barangay Captain Francisco Benedicto as Jeffrey Mendoza Cañedo, a security guard residing in Labangon, Cebu City.
Cañedo was said to arrive at the palace by 11 in the morning asking if he could see the cardinal. Learning that the cardinal was already dead, he then insisted to see Bishop Palma who fortunately was in Manila for a plenary assembly in Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP).
According to Joseph Tan, Media Liaison Officer of the Archdiocese of Cebu, Cañedo refused to leave even after knowing of the absence of the archbishop. He acted violently and barged in the palace riding his motorcycle which prompted the security to call for police assistance.
Cañedo was being persuaded then to surrender but allegedly opted to shoot it out with members of Cebu Police leading to his death.

Police Chief Superintendent Debold Sinas, the Regional Director (RD) of the Police Regional Office-7 clarified that the incident is not an attack on the church but just an isolated case.
