Long queuing at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) will soon be a thing of the past as the Bureau of Immigration (BI) yesterday started the installation of new machines that would somehow address the decades-old problem.
According to BI OIC Deputy Commissioner and Port Operation Division chief Marc Red Mariñas, by end of the year, about 21 units of the E-Gate will be deployed in the immigration counters of the country’s major airports, including those in Clark, Davao and Kalibo, and the new airport in Cebu.
He said the BI will install six E-Gates in NAIA Terminal 3, five units in NAIA Terminal 1 and the rest of the machines will be placed in Clark, Davao and other international airports.
Mariñas said that using the E-Gate will only take 12 to 15 seconds as passengers will only have to swipe their passports, have biometrics and undergo facial capturing.
The official explained that the E-Gates will be used by Filipinos only and will not lessen the number of immigration officers occupying the airports. Foreigners, on the other hand, will still have to go through immigration officers.
