THE Tapang at Malasakit Alliance for the Philippines (TM), led by Davao City Mayor and Presidential daughter Sara Duterte-Carpio, will build a memorial to honor the members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines killed while liberating Marawi City from Maute terrorists.
The memorial will be erected at the Libingan ng mga Bayani with the Pilipinong May Puso Foundation (PMP) and the San Miguel Foundation funding the project.
TM Executive Director lawyer Karen Jimeno and TM Marawi Project Director Alan Luga on May 10 signed a memorandum of agreement with PMP and San Miguel Foundation through A5R Dynamics Construction Corporation.
The memorial was designed by Moro artist Juan Sajid Imao, son of the first Muslim National Artist Abdulmari Asia Imao.
Imao’s design features the Sarimanok, a prominent figure in Maranao culture.

In his notes, Imao said of the design: “The sculpture uses the sarimanok, the legendary bird in Maranao culture, as a design element. In Maranao folklore, the sarimanok, which is typically accompanied by a fish, serves as a symbol of power of the Sultan. The Sultan rules the land while the sarimanok also acts as the messenger of the Sultan.”
“By using the idea of the sarimanok as the messenger in the sculpture, people who will visit this memorial can be assured that the messages they want to convey to their loved ones will be delivered to the afterlife,” Imao said.
The memorial will show the “sarimanok’s stylized tail and plumes flowing in graceful lines to form a unique eternal flame – – symbolizing the heroism of soldiers in Marawi.”
It will also bear another prominent cultural identity of the Maranaws – – the okir.
During the design process, Jimeno said Imao “personally visited Marawi to interact with the soldiers and obtained relics from the ruins to incorporate in the memorial.”
The memorial monument is expected to be completed in 5 months.
TM was established last year to unify all groups and individuals supportive of the peace and development agenda of President Rodrigo Duterte for the country.
