Six members of the Philippine National Police (PNP) were killed while nine others were wounded in an apparent “misencounter” between Army troops and PNP forces in Samar province yesterday.
Initial report from Chief Supt. Mariel Magaway, director of the Police Regional Office-8 (PRO-8) showed that the “misencounter” erupted at around 9:27 a.m. along Barangay Sta. Rosa in Villareal town.
Report showed that separate elements of the PNP’s 805th Regional Mobile Force (RMF) and the Army’s 87th Infantry Battalion when the firefight erupted.
The “misencounter” resulted in six PNP personnel killed and nine wounded.
Killed in action were PO2 Rowel Reyes, PO1 Phil Rey Mendigo, PO1 Edwin Ebredo, PO1 Endel Normar, PO1 Julie escalo and PO1 Julius Suarez.

Wounded were PO1 Romulo Cordero, PO1 Elmer Pan, PO1 James Galoy, PO1 Rey Barbosa, PO1 Goner Gonzaga, PO3 Roden Guden and three others.
There was no reported casualty on the Army side.
According to Maj. Gen. Raul Farnacio, commander of the Army’s 8th Infantry Division which has operational supervision over the 87th IB, said that the troops had been operating in the area for five days before the incident.
Farnacio said that the 87th IB troops were operating against a band of communist New People’s Army (NPA) rebels there.
The Army general said he is saddened by the incident.
PRO-8 has already activated a special investigation task group (SITG) to conduct a probe of the matter.
