Iriga-Navy snapped a long losing skid the hard way but its scrambling 25-9, 21-25, 26-28, 25-21, 15-13 decision over Tacloban yesterday revived its flickering hopes in the quarterfinal round of the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Reinforced Conference at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan.
The Lady Oragons blew a huge lead in the early goings of the decider, but fought back from two down in the stretch to steal the morale-boosting victory on a Macy Ubben’s kill block and Shyra Cabriana’s lucky ace.
The win thus ended Iriga’s harrowing eight-game slump, including six in the eliminations.
And although the Lady Oragons remained at fifth in the six-team field with a 1-2 card, they stayed in the hunt in the spirited battle for the last two berths in the semifinal round of the season-opening conference organized by Sports Vision.
“We really had to work hard and stay focused on the job,” said Ubben, who finished with 25 hits, the output put in by fellow American Lauren Whyte, including three in their stretch-run rally.

“The girls are just hungry for a win,” said Iriga’s soft-spoken coach Egay Rusit.
While Iriga wheeled back into contention, Tacloban virtually bowed out of the semis race with a third straight defeat in the single round phase after turning in an impressive third place effort in the elims of the tournament backed by Mikasa and Asics.
Gracielle Bombita also stepped up to chip in eight markers for the Oragons, who will next face the BanKo-Perlas Spikers on Wednesday before winding up their campaign against the PetroGazz Angels next Saturday. AFP
