Has Kris Aquino finally found her match?

The celebrated, at times controversial TV host had posted on Instagram and Facebook about a “special” person she had been seeing lately and whom she greeted on his birthday on 11 August.

Aquino tried in vain to keep under wraps his identity, but Mel Senen Sarmiento was forced to identify himself as the person she was referring to — after a netizen started bashing Aquino over her post.

“Konting respeto naman sa ‘min ni Kris (Give us a little respect),” Samiento said.

A former government official, Sarmiento is currently teaching at the Local Government Academy and Development Academy of the Philippines, a source told Daily Tribune.

Sarmiento is also chair of SOS Children’s Villages Philippines, a private, non-political, non-denominational organization that provides family-like care to children in need.

“He loves children,” said the source. “He has a grown-up child studying at the Ateneo.”

The source, a resident of Calbayog, Samar — where Sarmiento was Vice Mayor (1992-’95), Mayor (2004-2011) and 1st District Representative (2010-’15) — said: “He’s not greedy for power, that’s why we love him.”

And what made Aquino love him?

In her social media post, she said Sarmiento came into her life “when my grief was unbearable; he continues to give me unselfish support and comfort; he’s been around for all my ups and downs, health woes and tears.

“Plus, Bimb (her younger son) likes him… most of all he makes me feel taken care of, secure and SAFE.”

In a succeeding post, Aquino said: “Thank you for wanting me to be happy; this time I feel even Noy in heaven will finally approve, siguro naman (I suppose) because we’d never have met, had it not been for him.”

Sarmiento happened to have also served as the last Interior Secretary of then President Noynoy Aquino’s administration after Jesse Robredo and Mar Roxas.

One other thing that Sarmiento and Ms. Aquino have in common: They both come from two failed unions.

Sarmiento’s first marriage, said the source, was annulled, and his second ended in separation.

Aquino broke off from her live-in relationship with actor Philip Salvador (whom she bore a son, Joshua) and likewise separated from basketball star James Yap, whom she married in civil rites and produced a son, Bimby.

Sarmiento is 58 while Aquino is 50.
