P5-M Marilao river wall collapses

A P5-million river wall in Barangay Prenza 2 collapsed last 10 August following heavy rainfall brought by the enhanced southwest monsoon, just two months after its completion.

The 45-meter-long, 12-meter-high structure collapsed around 5 p.m., prompting criticism from residents and local social media users who questioned the quality of materials and construction, suspecting the structure was unable to withstand strong flood currents.

Contractor JB Construction denied allegations of cutting corners, stating the project strictly adhered to engineering plans, steel specifications and concrete thickness.

The company attributed the structural failure to extreme hydrostatic pressure caused by water-saturated soil pushing against the wall.

Marilao Mayor Jamina Sy officially launched an investigation into the collapse and inspected the damaged site alongside municipal officials on Wednesday.

“We visited the damaged riprap at Beverly 1, Barangay Prenza 2, to assess the damage caused by the southwest monsoon. We will ensure the contractor rebuilds it at no additional cost to the local government. We will continue to monitor its repair for the safety of our residents,” Sy said, assuring residents that the contractor will rebuild the structure at no additional cost to the municipal government.

Meanwhile, local officials in neighboring barangays reported widening gaps and leaning dikes along other river walls in the municipality, raising further safety concerns among residents.
