Fisherfolk alliance launched to counter WPS misinformation

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has launched a nationwide alliance of fisherfolk to help counter misinformation on the West Philippine Sea (WPS), expanding the role of coastal communities in promoting fact-based information on one of the country’s key fishing grounds.

Called the Alliance of Fisherfolk for Truthful Information and Narratives on the West Philippine Sea (ATIN WPS), the initiative seeks to equip fisherfolk with factual, evidence-based, and legally grounded knowledge on the WPS. 

BFAR said on Sunday the program will enable them to counter misinformation and disinformation while serving as trusted sources of information in their communities.

More than 80 fisherfolk leaders from across the country attended the launch in Subic Bay Freeport on 24 July. 

BFAR National Director Elizer S. Salilig said fisherfolk are “more than providers of food for the nation—they are vital partners in sustaining coastal communities and maintaining a Filipino presence in areas such as Pag-asa Island.”
