Northern Samar explores broader opportunities in organic farming

TACLOBAN CITY – The provincial government of Northern Samar is exploring wider opportunities for organic farming by applying modern agricultural practices that will yield high-quality crops.

Governor Harris Christopher Ongchuan met with officials of two non-government organizations promoting organic farming to discuss programs of the provincial government and scheduled organic farming training for local farmers.

He said the province is partnering with Naturland, an international organic farming certifying body, and MASIPAG, a group of agricultural scientists promoting organic farming, in carrying out initiatives that promote sustainable and organic farming practices.

Provincial Agriculture Office chief Dr. Jose Luis Acompanado said the organic farming training emphasizes practical learning, farmer empowerment, and long-term support to help communities transition toward organic and sustainable farming methods.

Ongchuan said he believes that promoting sustainable agricultural practices will increase Northern Samar’s capacity to produce quality and high-value organic agricultural products.

He added that this will not only improve the agricultural practices of local farmers and increase their yield but also increase the chances of bringing their harvest to the international market.
