The Department of Agriculture (DA) is intensifying monitoring and support for onion farmers in Occidental Mindoro as farmgate prices fluctuate between P30 and P45 per kilogram.

Under the direction of Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr., the agency’s “Task Force Sibuyas” has been tracking price movements across five municipalities in the province. The move aims to stabilize the market and protect local producers from significant financial losses.

Atty. Christopher R. Bañas, DA-MIMAROPA regional executive director, said the department is focusing on interventions designed to lower production costs and boost farmer earnings.

“We understand the concerns and the challenges being faced by our farmers under the current onion price situation,” Bañas said. “While price movements depend on prevailing market conditions, we would like to assure them that we continue to take action to provide the necessary support.”

The department’s support package includes the distribution of quality seeds and fertilizers, as well as the strengthening of cold storage facilities to extend the shelf life of the harvest. The DA is also working to expand market linkages, connecting farmers directly with buyers to bypass unnecessary middlemen.

Bañas clarified that while the DA does not have the legal mandate to set price ceilings or impose direct price controls, the agency is coordinating with local governments and stakeholders to ensure orderly trade.

“Within the scope of our authority and responsibilities, we are doing everything we can to extend assistance and implement interventions that will help ease their situation,” he added.

The DA-MIMAROPA office stated it remains committed to providing timely market data and import policy updates to ensure the onion sector maintains a fair and stable income.
