Anti-dynasty bills not dead on water, House exec assures

House Speaker Faustino “Bojie” G. Dy III said Friday the House of Representatives remains committed to passing an anti-political dynasty law during the 20th Congress, as lawmakers continued nationwide consultations in Cagayan de Oro City.

In a video message delivered to stakeholders at the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines, Dy said the goal is to pass a measure that is legally sound and enforceable, not merely to comply with a constitutional provision.

“We are serious about passing a fair, just and implementable Anti-Political Dynasty Law in the 20th Congress,” Dy said.

At least 24 bills seeking to prohibit political dynasties have been filed in the House, including House Bill 6771 authored by Dy and House Majority Leader Ferdinand Alexander “Sandro” A. Marcos.

The proposals aim to define prohibited family relationships and set limits on holding elective office.

The consultations are being conducted by the House Committee on Suffrage and Electoral Reforms, chaired by Lanao del Sur Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong, as part of a three-island dialogue to gather public input before consolidating the measures.

Freedom of choice

Dy said the final version of the proposed law should reflect views from across the country.

“We believe any law we pass must be the product of wide, inclusive and sincere consultation — carefully crafted, thoroughly studied and grounded in the sentiments of the Filipino people,” he said.
