Bureau of Customs Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno commended the Port of Cagayan de Oro for the destruction of smuggled cigarettes seized in a series of anti-smuggling operations.
On 16 February, the BOC Port of Cagayan de Oro conducted the public condemnation of 4,360 master cases and 10 reams of illicit cigarettes, along with 24 sets and 37 pieces of vape juice. The destruction was carried out through hydrolysis and physical dismantling at the Subport of Mindanao Container Terminal in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental.
The seized items, with an estimated market value of P188,038,350 as assessed by Customs examiners, were confiscated during intelligence-driven enforcement operations across Cagayan de Oro, Misamis Oriental, Lanao del Sur, Lanao del Norte, Bukidnon and Camiguin.
Nepomuceno said the operation reflects the port’s firm commitment to enforcing customs laws, protecting public health and safeguarding government revenues.
“The destruction of these smuggled cigarettes sends a clear message that the Bureau of Customs will not tolerate unlawful importation and distribution. We will continue to protect public interest and promote fair and lawful trade,” he said.
The BOC reiterated that cigarette smuggling deprives the government of revenues needed for essential public services, undermines legitimate businesses and poses risks to consumers.
